Introduction to the tabla

The tabla is a pair of small drums fundamental to Hindustani music. The higher-pitched drum, played with the right hand, is called the daya. The lower-pitched drum, played with the left hand, is called the baya. The tabla is used in a variety of genres and styles of Hindustani music. Also, it is frequently played in popular and folk music performances and the bhakti devotional traditions of Hinduism and Sikhism. The playing technique is complex and involves extensive use of the fingers and palms to create a wide variety of different sounds and rhythms.
